* Interpret therapy reports such as surgical, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, endocrine therapy, immunotherapy, and other new and experimental therapy administered for the definitive treatment of cancer.
* Abstract within six months of diagnosis as required by ACOS/COC and within six months of presentation as required by FCDS.
* Keep abreast of developments in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

Qualifications

* Knowledge of basic human/microscopic anatomy, classification of tumors, and staging systems.
* Knowledge of the difference between benign, uncertain potential, and malignant tumor.

* Detailed and reproducible results of routine and complex manual and automated Histology as ordered by the Clinician or Laboratory Director. Duties are produced in a timely manner and to allow for supervisory review when indicated.
* Performs and understands quality control programs including evaluation of staining, documentation of errors and corrective action, and the maintenance of records in the appropriate logs.
* Performs and records scheduled equipment maintenance, troubleshooting of equipment problems, and provides immediate notification to department supervisor in the event of any malfunctions.
* Assures that all slides being sent out meet acceptable levels of quality for processing, sectioning, staining, and specimen accountability.

Confirms that requestor has signed the computer and information usage/security agreement. Creates and updates individual sign-ons for appropriate users. Establishes consistency in the way users access and are identified in each system.
* Makes recommendations to improve awareness of security and patient confidentiality throughout the organization. Keeps current with dictated or legislated regulations that impact the security or dissemination of medical information. Implements high-profile methods of organization-wide communications about security and patient confidentiality for new and existing staff.
* Performs auditing functions. Establishes procedures for auditing information regarding access to and creation of data. Monitors security reports generated for unauthorized use of passwords and inappropriate access to patient information. Investigates possible security breaches identified through review of audit reports or received from individuals. Conducts random reviews of new sign-ons to check for accuracy. Communicates to MIS management (in writing) details regarding security infractions and misuse of medical information. Acts as internal consultant implementing security policies and procedures for the daily operations and handling of computerized information.
* Implements methods to ensure data recoverability. Monitors organizational compliance with daily operational guidelines ensuring scheduling and storage of back-ups and system documentation is maintained. Assists in the preparation of plans and methods to resume normal operations in the event of long-term equipment failure.
